Ingredients(scaled)

  • 1 1/4 tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • ½ cup warm water
  • ½ tsp sugar
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ 1/2 tsp salt
  • ½ tbsp olive oil

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine the yeast, warm water, and sugar. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil.
  3. Stir the mixture until it forms a rough dough.
  4. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. Preheat your oven to the highest temperature (usually around 500°F or 260°C) with a baking stone or overturned baking sheet inside.
  7. Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal portions. Shape each portion into a ball and let them rest for 10 minutes.
  8. Roll out each ball into a circle about 1/4 inch thick.
  9. Carefully place the rolled-out dough onto the preheated baking stone or sheet and bake for 3-4 minutes until puffed and lightly browned.
  10. Repeat with the remaining dough balls.
  11. Serve the pita bread warm and enjoy!
